The name Thunderbloom is a compound of ‘Thunderbird’ and ‘Flower Bloom.’ Depending on which part of the image you focus on, the diagonally placed shapes might look like a flock of thunderbirds converging or like lotus blossoms riding ripples across a pond.
Beadwork holds a special childhood nostalgia for me. One of my earliest prized posessions was a beaded bracelet I brought back from a roadtrip to New Mexico. I remember being in the back of our minivan studying the beads, out the window miles of endless nothing passing by as we crept across West Texas at 55mph.
This quilt takes me back to that summer, and the hours I spent with my sisters attempting to create our own beaded masterpieces.
This quilt appears as a featured pattern in Issue 4 of Curated Quilts Quarterly Journal (Published July 2018).
